Studio Sam was founded in London by Alessandra Melchiorri, who work on private residential projects with a mix of renovations and new builds. Always aiming to bring authenticity to each project with the use of a natural palette of materials and textures. Refinement, calmness and simplicity are their core principles.

describe your style:

I like to think that my style is constantly evolving with time, my aim is to create timeless spaces that should feel unpretentious, yet warm and luxurious. I am obsessed with balance and I am constantly searching for harmony.  I believe that a space should enhance the story behind it.

—the most important thing you’ve designed to date:

A 5 bedroom listed home in London, the clients are really what makes a project special.

—what is one Alessandra Melchiorri product that one must have?

Studio Sam’s signature Cinque Terre side table! It’s the most versatile piece I’ve designed, not only it can be used as a stool, as a plinth or as a side table but also the combination of materials is so fun and works with any palette. It started as a sustainability project, where we were using off-cuts of marble pieces that were being unused - so I like to think that I saved a little piece of mountain for every Cinque Terre we’ve made.

—what do you do when you’re not working?

I cook my nonna’s recipes and paint, acrylic mostly - I am constantly looking for the latest art exhibition and London is the perfect city for it.

—3 suppliers you love working with:

The Invisible Collection, the variety of amazing artists they have is incredible and also their team is unbelievably good. Cox London, because they make the most precious hand-made lighting pieces. And last but not least, Dorian Caffot, if you are looking for a really special antique piece, he’s your man.

—advice you would give a young designer starting their career:

The only way to be creative is to be open-minded. Be curious, get to know suppliers, workshops and fellow designers, everyone makes mistakes and the only way forward is to learn from them.  Surround yourself with people you admire, my ex-boss has been my biggest mentor and I could never thank her enough.

—Concrete or marble:

Marble all the way!

—favourite hotel in the world:

Castello di Reschio, I might be biased as it’s very close to my heart and my hometown in Italy. But this thousand-year-old castle is the most incredible place you will ever go to.

—design hero:

Axel Vervoordt without doubt.
