  • payment and transaction information. Payments may be processed by third-party payment providers; we do not ordinarily receive or store full payment-card details;

  • newsletter and marketing information, including subscription status, preferences and engagement information such as opens or clicks where available and lawful;

  • technical and usage information, such as IP address, browser/device information, pages viewed, referral information and cookie or analytics identifiers;

Where We Obtain Personal Information

We obtain personal information directly from you when you submit a form, subscribe, apply, join, contact us, participate in the community, attend an event, submit editorial material or enter into a commercial relationship with us.

We may also receive professional information from your studio or employer, PR representatives, photographers, collaborators, nominators, other members, publicly available professional websites and social-media profiles, press releases, media databases or other legitimate professional sources.

Where we obtain personal information from someone other than you, we will provide privacy information where required by law.

How and Why We Use Personal Information

We use personal information for the following purposes and lawful bases:

Website and enquiries

To operate the website, respond to enquiries and provide requested information. We generally rely on legitimate interests in operating Designeers and responding to professional enquiries, or steps taken at your request before entering a contract.

Membership applications and administration

To assess applications, administer membership, provide the Members Lounge, manage trials, renewals and benefits, and communicate with members. We generally rely on performance of a contract or steps requested before entering a contract. Curatorial assessment may also involve our legitimate interests in maintaining a relevant and trusted community.

BlackBook and editorial activity

To assess potential editorial subjects, commission or publish content, maintain profiles, manage credits and communicate with contributors. We generally rely on legitimate interests in operating an independent design publication and directory, contractual arrangements where applicable, and consent where it is specifically required.

Members Lounge and community

To provide community functionality, facilitate participation, enforce community standards and protect the integrity and security of the community. We generally rely on performance of the membership contract and our legitimate interests in operating a safe, useful professional network.

Newsletters and marketing

To send newsletters, membership news, invitations, editorial updates, event information and relevant promotional communications. We rely on consent where required by PECR and, in appropriate business-to-business circumstances, legitimate interests where lawful. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Events, Experiences and Design Journeys

To process applications and bookings, administer attendance, communicate logistical information and deliver the relevant Experience. We generally rely on performance of a contract or steps requested before entering a contract, and legitimate interests for associated administration.

Brand partnerships and Industry Partners

To develop, negotiate, administer and report on advertising, sponsorship, editorial-commercial collaborations, Member Privileges and other business relationships. We generally rely on contract, steps before contract and our legitimate interests in developing and managing Designeers' commercial relationships.

Payments, accounting and legal compliance

To process payments, maintain financial records, manage invoices, prevent fraud and comply with tax, accounting and other legal obligations. We rely on contract, legal obligation and legitimate interests as appropriate.

Analytics, security and improvement

To understand use of our services, protect our systems, diagnose problems and improve the website and membership experience. We rely on legitimate interests for strictly necessary or non-cookie processing and consent where required for non-essential cookies or similar technologies.

Legal claims and protection

To establish, exercise or defend legal claims, enforce our terms, protect our rights and respond to lawful requests. We rely on legal obligations and legitimate interests as appropriate.

Our Legitimate Interests

Where we rely on legitimate interests, those interests may include operating and improving Designeers; maintaining editorial independence and a curated professional community; developing professional and commercial relationships; communicating with relevant industry contacts; preventing misuse and fraud; protecting our systems, members and business; and understanding engagement with our services.

We consider whether those interests are necessary and balanced against the rights and reasonable expectations of the people concerned. You may have a right to object to processing based on legitimate interests.

Editorial, BlackBook and Public Professional Information

Designeers is an editorial platform and professional design directory. Some information about designers, studios, makers, brands and other professionals may be intended for publication and therefore visible publicly.

Where you provide information for a published feature, BlackBook profile or other editorial purpose, the resulting published content may remain part of the Designeers editorial archive even if our underlying working files are later deleted, subject to applicable law and legitimate editorial considerations.

If you believe published personal information is inaccurate or raises a privacy concern, contact us at contact@designeersclub.com

Membership and Members Lounge Data

Membership information is used to administer your relationship with Designeers and provide access to the Members Lounge and relevant benefits.

Information you choose to include in your community profile or posts may be visible to other authorised community participants according to the settings and structure of the Members Lounge.

Please do not post personal information that you do not want other authorised participants to see. Other members are subject to our community rules, but we cannot control every action taken by another participant after information has legitimately been viewed.

Payments

Payments may be handled by third-party payment processors or membership platforms. Those providers process payment information under their own privacy terms and applicable data-protection responsibilities.

Designeers may receive transaction information such as your name, billing contact details, payment status, amount, subscription or renewal information and limited payment-method information, but we do not ordinarily store full card numbers or security codes.

Who We Share Personal Information With

We may share personal information where reasonably necessary with categories of recipients including:

  • website, hosting, community and technology service providers, including Squarespace for our public website and Circle for the Members Lounge where applicable;

  • payment processors and subscription-management providers;

  • email, newsletter, forms, scheduling and communications providers, including Flodesk for email marketing and related integrations where applicable;

  • analytics, security and IT-support providers, including Google in connection with Google Analytics 4;

  • professional advisers such as accountants, lawyers and insurers;

  • event venues, travel or Experience providers where necessary to deliver something you have booked or requested;

  • contractors and team members who support Designeers and require access for their role;

  • Industry Partners or other third parties where you have requested an introduction, benefit or interaction, or where sharing is otherwise clearly explained;

  • regulators, courts, law-enforcement bodies or other authorities where required by law; and

  • a buyer, investor or successor organisation in connection with a genuine corporate transaction, subject to appropriate safeguards.

We do not sell personal information to advertisers.

International Transfers

Some of our service providers, including technology providers such as Squarespace, Google, Flodesk and Circle where applicable, may process personal information outside the United Kingdom, including in the United States or other countries.

Where UK data-protection rules on restricted international transfers apply, we take steps intended to ensure an appropriate transfer mechanism is in place, such as UK adequacy regulations or recognised contractual safeguards, as applicable.

You may contact us if you would like further information about the safeguards relevant to your personal information.

How Long We Keep Personal Information

We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, including legal, accounting, contractual, editorial and dispute-resolution requirements.

Retention periods vary by category. In general, we may retain:

  • membership and transaction records for the membership relationship and an appropriate period afterwards for legal, tax and accounting purposes;

  • unsuccessful or inactive application information for a limited period where useful for managing future applications or invitations, unless you ask us to delete it sooner and we have no overriding reason to retain it;

  • newsletter subscription records until you unsubscribe, plus suppression information needed to respect your opt-out;

  • commercial contracts, invoices and related records for the periods required by law and normal business record-keeping;

  • event and Experience records for as long as needed to administer the event and deal with legal or accounting matters;

  • general correspondence for as long as reasonably relevant to the relationship or enquiry; and

  • published editorial and BlackBook material as part of our editorial archive, subject to applicable law.

We periodically review information and delete or anonymise it when it is no longer needed.

Marketing Communications

You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time by using the unsubscribe link in an email or contacting us.

Unsubscribing from marketing does not prevent us from sending service messages that are necessary for an active membership, booking, transaction or other relationship.

We may retain a minimal suppression record after you unsubscribe so that we can respect your preference.

Cookies and Similar Technologies

Our website uses cookies and similar technologies. Squarespace uses cookies that are necessary to operate the website and may also support analytics and other functionality. We also use Google Analytics 4 to help us understand how visitors use the Website. Non-essential cookies are restricted unless and until the visitor makes the relevant choice through our cookie-consent mechanism.

Where PECR requires consent, non-essential cookies and similar technologies are not intended to be activated until you have made the relevant choice through our cookie-consent mechanism. Visitors can accept all cookies, decline non-essential cookies or manage their preferences.

Our cookie controls allow visitors to manage their preferences and to change those preferences later. Strictly necessary cookies cannot generally be disabled through the consent tool because they are required for core website functionality.

The particular cookies and technologies used may change as we update our website and service providers. We will keep our cookie disclosures and consent settings under review so that they reflect the technologies we use.

You can also control cookies through your browser, although blocking strictly necessary cookies may affect website functionality.

Analytics and Email Engagement

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors interact with the Website. Depending on your consent choices and the configuration of the service, this may involve information such as device and browser information, approximate location derived from technical data, referral source, pages viewed and interactions with the Website. We also use Squarespace Analytics and its activity-log functionality for website measurement and administration. Flodesk may provide engagement information relating to our newsletters, such as opens and clicks, where available and lawful.

Where consent is legally required for a particular tracking technology, we rely on consent. You can decline non-essential cookies or change your cookie preferences through the Website. Where a technology does not require cookie consent, any personal-data processing will still require an appropriate lawful basis under data-protection law.

Social Media and Third-Party Links

Our website and communications may link to third-party websites and social-media platforms. Those organisations process information under their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their privacy practices.

If you interact with Designeers through a social-media platform, both Designeers and the platform may process information relating to that interaction according to their respective roles.

Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorised access, loss, misuse, alteration or disclosure.

No internet or information-storage system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your Data Protection Rights

Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law may give you rights to:

  • request access to personal information we hold about you;

  • ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information;

  • ask us to erase personal information in certain circumstances;

  • ask us to restrict processing in certain circumstances;

  • object to processing based on legitimate interests and object to direct marketing at any time;

  • receive certain information in a portable format where the right to data portability applies;

  • withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent, without affecting processing already carried out before withdrawal; and

  • raise concerns about how we use your personal information.

These rights are not absolute and may be subject to exemptions or conditions under applicable law.

To exercise a right, contact contact@designeersclub.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.

Complaints

If you have a concern about our use of your personal information, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it.

You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK supervisory authority for data protection. Information about making a complaint is available on the ICO's official website.

Automated Decision-Making

We do not currently intend to make decisions about individuals based solely on automated processing that produce legal or similarly significant effects.

If this changes, we will provide the information required by applicable law.

Children

Designeers is directed primarily at adult design professionals, businesses and design audiences and is not intended as a service for children.

We do not knowingly seek to collect personal information directly from children through membership or professional application processes. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us inappropriately, please contact us.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy & Cookies Policy as our services, technologies or legal obligations change. The latest version will be published on our website with its effective date.

If we plan to use personal information for a materially different purpose, we will provide additional information or notice where required.
