Designed by Edoardo Cozzani, Spolia explores the relationship between history, material transformation, and contemporary making. Taking its name from the medieval practice of repurposing fragments of earlier architecture, the project reflects on what is preserved from the past and what emerges in the present. Through the unlikely union of stone and blown glass, Cozzani creates sculptural compositions that exist between permanence and fragility, weight and lightness.
Solid stone boulders are cut into sections and reassembled through molten glass elements that act as both connective tissue and structural support. The contrast is striking: stone carries the memory of geological time, while glass remains fluid, immediate, and unpredictable. As hot glass is compressed between the stone forms, the material responds instinctively, creating unique tensions and balances that cannot be fully controlled.
Available in a variety of forms, including sculptural vessels, tables, and collectible objects, the Spolia Collection is crafted using a selection of marbles, travertine, Murano blown glass, and stainless steel. Each piece is unique, reflecting Cozzani's ongoing exploration of material experimentation, contemporary craftsmanship, and the evolving relationship between history, nature, and design.
Size:
47 x 6 x 5 inches
Materials: Amber blown Murano glass, stainless steel, lighting fixture
About the Designer
Edoardo Cozzani is a designer and artist whose practice explores the intersection of craft, technology, and speculative futures. Working across collectible design, lighting, and sculptural objects, he combines traditional techniques with experimental processes to investigate the evolving relationship between nature and human intervention. Through materials such as blown glass, metal, and industrial components, Cozzani creates works that blur the boundaries between the organic and the artificial, resulting in pieces that function as both design objects and conceptual narratives.
