Rather than documenting every practice, the BlackBook recognises those whose work demonstrates originality, craftsmanship, consistency and cultural influence.

The BlackBook exists to celebrate exceptional creative work through independent editorial judgement rather than commercial visibility.
Every inclusion reflects the considered judgement of our editors, informed by years of research, conversations, exhibitions, studio visits and engagement with the international design community. The BlackBook is continually reviewed and refined as contemporary design evolves.

No. The BlackBook is not application-based. Our editors continually research and review practices internationally, adding new names as the field evolves.

No. Membership and editorial recognition are intentionally separate. Becoming a member does not guarantee inclusion in the BlackBook, and many BlackBook practices are not members.
