New York–based Studio Zung has built its reputation on designing spaces that live at the intersection of architecture, art, and lifestyle. Their latest project, Maison Wooster, embodies this philosophy with graceful precision. Rooted in the creative pulse of Soho yet grounded in serenity, the home balances restraint and warmth, function and poetry.

Led by Tommy Zung, the studio’s multidisciplinary approach merges modern innovation with artisanal craft. Each project reflects a deep understanding of human rhythm and emotion, a belief that design should serve as both refuge and revelation.

In this exclusive Designeers interview, Tommy Zung discusses the making of Maison Wooster, the harmony between art and intimacy, and what timeless design truly means in a world led by constant motion.

Maison Wooster balances restraint and luxury. What inspired this atmosphere of serenity in the heart of Soho?

Studio Zung

With Shop Zung rooted in Soho, we carry a deep connection to the neighbourhood. Its vibrancy, creative energy, and artistic legacy inform so much of our work, and here they became an essential source of inspiration. At the same time, the home needed to counterbalance that dynamism, offering a place of stillness and calm. We sought to create a sanctuary, a space where the client could feel grounded amid the rhythm and intensity of the city.

Your portfolio often merges architecture, interiors, and lifestyle. Where do you find the stories that guide your projects?

Studio Zung

The stories are born from connection. They emerge through time spent understanding a client’s world, their rhythms, rituals, and aspirations, and translating that into a space that reflects both who they are and who they are becoming.

You’ve worked with iconic design pieces from Pierre Augustin Rose to Vladimir Kagan. How do you decide which collectible works belong in a space?

Studio Zung

I look to curate collectible design pieces that create both harmony and tension within a space. It’s about balancing the iconic with the unexpected, pairing works by designers like Pierre Augustin Rose or Vladimir Kagan with contemporary craftsmanship to form an atmosphere that feels timeless yet alive. Each object must hold its own narrative while contributing to the overall rhythm of the interior.

Studio Zung’s work often feels like a gallery one could live in. How do you balance comfort with the purity of form?

Studio Zung

My work exists in the dialogue between art and intimacy, where the purity of form meets the warmth of human connection. I design spaces that feel like a gallery one can live in, where architectural clarity is softened by texture, light, and emotion. It’s about inhabiting the artist’s energy, creating environments where the serenity of a gallery converges with the soul and comfort of a home.

What does “modern, tailored, and meticulously considered” mean in practice for your team?

Studio Zung

Modern means innovative. Tailored means strong and gentle details. Meticulously considered means mindfully refined.
