What was the spark? Can you tell us about the moment that first pulled you into the world of interiors?
Alissa Johnson
Growing up, my parents worked with an interior designer, and I still vividly remember the transformation that took place in our home. It wasn't just about new furniture or fresh paint—it was the way the energy shifted. The redesigned rooms felt warmer, more intentional, and somehow more "us," and we naturally started gravitating toward those spaces more. I didn't realise it then, but that experience planted a seed. As I got older, I began paying attention to how environments influence the way we feel—how thoughtful design and well-considered interior design services can create unique interiors that feel truly personal. That feeling stuck with me. And in many ways, it still guides me today.

You made the leap from the business world into the creative cosmos of design, what inspired the switch, and how has it shaped your creative lens?
Alissa Johnson
With a background in business and a specialisation in entrepreneurship-paired with a lifelong love of textiles and colour-starting my own firm, Alissa Johnson Interiors, felt like a natural next step. Before launching the firm, my career began in accounting and operations in the design world. Over time, I evolved into a role that merged both design and operations, serving as Chief Operating Officer at RDID.
That experience gave me the foundation, insight, and smooth transition to step into the beautiful journey of opening up Alissa Johnson Interiors.

What do you do outside of work that feeds your soul or your moodboard?
Alissa Johnson
Outside of work, I'm passionate about fashion, health and fitness, music, and spending time with my two pups, Chip and Oliver. I also love to travel and find inspiration everywhere-from interior design and fashion accounts on Instagram and Pinterest to the places I explore along the way. Staying creatively inspired is something I'm always seeking, both in and out of the studio.

Whose work do you absolutely adore, and how have they shaped your own creative DNA?
Alissa Johnson
Jessie Schuster, Julie Hillman, Alisa Bloom, Ali Budd, Michelle Gerson.
I'm endlessly inspired by designers who know how to create bold, layered spaces with a distinct point of view.
Julie Hillman stands out for her fearless use of form, materiality, and scale- she's a master of statement-making design that still feels deeply intentional. That sense of bold sophistication also comes through in the work of Ali Budd and Michelle Gerson, both of whom combine luxury with livability. Their spaces are elevated, glamorous, and never too serious— a balance I admire. On the more textural, nuanced side, Jessica Schuster and Alisa Bloom both work with a refined, earthy palette and an intuitive sense of layering that makes every space feel soulful and luxurious. Together, they've all shaped how I think about contrast, restraint, and the power of well-edited, personal design.
That design DNA influences how I approach each space—with the goal of creating unique interiors that reflect both individuality and sophistication.
“I'm loving the rise of micro-luxuries-the concept that even the smallest, high-end elements like hardware, vases, or linens can bring a sense of indulgence and luxury to a space. ”

What's next? Which up-and-coming trends are catching your eye right now, and how might they sneak into your next project?
Alissa Johnson
What's catching my eye right now are rich, moody palettes- think deep aubergine, forest green, and other saturated hues-balanced with warm undertones to keep the overall feel inviting and cosy.
I'm also loving the rise of micro-luxuries-the concept that even the smallest, high-end elements like hardware, vases, or linens can bring a sense of indulgence and luxury to a space. These trends are already making their mark in our work, having been thoughtfully incorporated into one of our historical Lincoln Park projects—and they'll continue to shape the direction of our upcoming designs.

Who are your top three ride-or-die suppliers you keep going back to?
Alissa Johnson
Chicago has no shortage of incredible suppliers, but a few stand out for their quality, consistency, and care.
Calia Stone Boutique is a staple in our sourcing process. Their inspiring selection, expert team, and concierge-level service consistently deliver one-of-a-kind, luxurious pieces.
Romo Fabrics is another essential. Their timeless yet trend-aware textiles, paired with a wide range of colours, patterns, and textures, make them our go-to for upholstery, draperies, and pillows.
Studio Finesse is our first call for speciality finishes. Their impeccable plasterwork—whether a subtle limewash or a dramatic sculptural fireplace—brings texture, soul, and refinement to every space.

Favourite design hotel in the world — the one you still dream about?
Alissa Johnson
The Inness Hotel in upstate New York--hands down. It's the kind of place that lingers in your mind long after you've left. Everything about it is quietly luxurious, the moody, minimalist interiors, the layers of natural texture, and the way the design blends so effortlessly with the surrounding landscape. Every space manages to be cosy and cool. Its design invites you in, slows you down, and makes you want to stay a little longer.

No budget, no limits, no rules — what would your fantasy project look like?
Alissa Johnson
A boutique hotel. Bold, sculptural, and editorial-with rich materials, unexpected details, and a layered, lived-in feel. Think transformative, custom everything: stone, plaster, velvet, wood, brass, and lacquer. Nothing off the shelf. Every surface and silhouette is intentionally designed.
A sophisticated design with edge, from a sultry, intimate lobby lounge bathed in moody lighting and statement art to serene, artful guest rooms that evoke the warmth and refinement of a private pied-à-terre.
In this space, every moment is chosen to surprise, delight, and linger in memory.
